With White Skin

I just finished reading “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett. Read this book before the movie hits theaters next year. It’s a gem for so many reasons. I could devote 20 posts to why it is a must-read.

“Being Negro with white skin … in Mississippi, it’s like you don’t belong to nobody … folks would look at her … White folks would stop her, ask her all suspicious what she doing toting round a white child … Even colored folks … they treat her different, distrustful, like she done something wrong.”

The passage above took the wind out of me because it captures how I’ve felt so many times in my life. Still do some days. It reminded me why I started a blog in the first place.

“The Help” moved me to laughter and to tears over and over again. Now, I have high expectations for the film. Some film adaptations of books fail miserably. This book provides such an opportunity to capture what love looks and sounds like. I can’t wait to see these characters come to life.

I asked three women if I could borrow their copy of “The Help.” Each one gave me the same answer, “I’ve loaned it to someone. As soon as she finishes it, you can read it!” I now know why SO many women have told me to read this book, why so many women loan this book to friends, neighbors and co-workers. @font-face { font-family: “Cambria”; }p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Cambria; }.MsoChpDefault { font-size: 10pt; font-family: Cambria; }div.WordSection1 { page: WordSection1;

So now I’m doing the same.

Read this book. I’m loaning it to someone. As soon as she finishes it, you can read it.
